Yes. You need at least the center fin. It is the single most important part for tracking, because it stops the tail from sliding sideways every time you take a stroke. Without a fin, the board wanders and spins in circles no matter how evenly you paddle, and staying on course becomes a fight. The fin also adds stability by giving the board a grip on the water underneath you. You can paddle a few feet across shallow water without one, but for any real distance a fin is not optional. Keep the center fin in and the board holds a straight line.
Here is what the fin actually does. Each paddle stroke pushes the board forward and also twists it slightly to the side. The fin hangs down into the water at the tail and resists that twist, so the board tracks straight instead of yawing back and forth. A deeper fin grips more and tracks better in open water, while a shorter fin lets you paddle shallow rivers and weedy shallows without catching the bottom.
Every NIXY G5 paddle board runs a single center fin, and it ships with the board. There are no side fins to add: the one center fin in the US fin box does the whole job. If you paddle mostly flatwater lakes and coastline, the stock 9 inch center fin is all you need. If you spend a lot of time in shallow rivers, a shorter or flexible center fin is a smart second fin, but it is still one center fin, not a thruster setup.
One thing to skip: the older 5 inch side fins you may see are a legacy part for boards built with side-fin boxes. They are not part of the G5 system, so a G5 owner does not need them and should not try to fit them.

The NIXY 9" Tool-less Center Fin ($19) is the stock all-around fin that ships with G5 boards and installs by hand with no tools. It is the right pick if you need a replacement or a spare for lake and coastal paddling.
Frequently asked questions
Can you paddle a board without a fin?
Technically for a few feet, but not in practice. Without a fin the board slides sideways and spins with each stroke, so you cannot hold a line or build speed. The only time to pull the fin is briefly in water too shallow for it, and even then you switch to a shorter fin rather than none.
Do NIXY paddle boards come with a fin?
Yes. Every NIXY G5 board ships with a 9 inch tool-less center fin that installs by hand. It is included in the box along with the paddle, pump, leash, repair kit, and backpack, so you are ready to paddle out of the bag.
Do you need side fins on a paddle board?
Not on a NIXY G5. These boards use a single center fin, not a thruster setup, and that one fin handles tracking and stability. The older 5 inch side fins are a legacy part for different boards and are not needed on a G5.
