Without it, the tail slides out with every stroke and the board wanders or spins, so you end up switching your paddle side after almost every stroke just to hold a line. The only time paddlers pull the fin is very shallow, rocky, or weedy water where a full-size fin would hit bottom, and even then they usually swap to a shorter fin rather than going without.
