Electric Motor for an Inflatable Kayak: Fit, Power, Range and Rules

Tedgix K4S Sport electric kayak motor with its wireless remote

Quick answer: You can add an electric motor to an inflatable kayak if the hull has a standard US fin box. A fin motor slides into that box under the kayak, a waterproof battery sits in the cockpit, and you steer and set speed from a wireless remote. The Tedgix K4C Cruise (400W) suits relaxed solo touring, and the Tedgix K4S Sport (1500W, 47 lbs of thrust) suits tandem kayaks, fishing loads and longer runs.

Searches like "K4 kayak motor" bring a steady stream of kayakers to our motor pages. This guide covers the questions behind them: fit, power, range and the rules.

Fin motor or transom trolling motor: which suits a kayak?

A traditional trolling motor clamps to a transom or a side mount and hangs off the back or side of the kayak. A fin motor mounts underneath, in the fin box, so there is no bracket to fit, nothing sticks out over the side, and the kayak still rolls up into its bag. For an inflatable kayak with a US fin box, a fin motor is usually the simpler route.

Does your kayak have a US fin box?

Flip the kayak and look at the center fin. If it slides into a long channel and locks with a screw and a small square plate, that is a standard US fin box, and a Tedgix K4 motor will mount in it. If the fin clips in, is molded on, or uses a different box, the motor will not mount without another adapter, so check with your kayak maker first.

K4C or K4S for a kayak?

  • Solo touring on lakes and calm rivers: the K4C. 400W, 22 lbs of thrust, up to 6 mph, and it weighs 3.4 lbs with its cable.
  • Tandem kayak with two paddlers: the K4S. Its 47 lbs of thrust holds a steady cruise of 3.5 to 5 mph with two adults aboard.
  • Kayak fishing: the K4S with the B15 battery. Tedgix rates it at about 14 hours in economy mode, enough for a long day of moving between spots.

How do you steer a kayak with a fin motor?

The K4S remote handles left and right steering and rudder trim, along with speed, forward and reverse, and one-touch cruise control. Its screen shows speed, battery level, voltage, current, RPM, trip distance and an odometer. The K4C remote covers forward, reverse, speed and cruise control, with a display for speed and battery. Either way, your paddle stays in the kayak for fine corrections and for getting home if the battery runs low.

Where does the battery go in a kayak?

Set it in the cockpit, in the footwell or behind your seat, and strap it to a D-ring so it cannot slide or go overboard. Keep the cable clear of your feet and your paddle stroke. The batteries are waterproof (IP68 on the B4, a sealed waterproof case on the B8 and B15), but rinse the connectors after saltwater days.

How far can an electric kayak motor take you?

  • K4C + B4 (423 Wh): about 5 hours at cruise, roughly 15 miles at 3.1 mph in calm water by our math
  • K4C + B8 (808 Wh): about 8.75 hours at cruise
  • K4S + B15 (1526 Wh): about 14 hours in economy mode, 1.9 hours at half throttle, 1 hour at full throttle

These are Tedgix's test figures. Two paddlers, fishing gear, wind and current all cut into them, so turn around with battery to spare.

Do you need to register a kayak with a motor?

In many states, yes. A paddle-only kayak usually needs no registration, but a motor can make it a motorized vessel. In California, any boat or vessel with a motor, no matter how small, must be registered with the DMV, and since January 1, 2025 every operator of a motorized vessel needs a California Boater Card (California DMV and California State Parks, checked October 2026). Other states set their own rules, and some lakes limit or ban motors, so check your state boating agency and your launch site before your first run.

Electric kayak motor care

  • Rinse the motor, propeller, mount and connectors with fresh water after every saltwater trip.
  • Let everything air-dry before you roll up the kayak or pack the motor.
  • Lift or remove the motor before you drag the kayak up a beach or over rocks; a spare propeller and guard are worth keeping in your kit.
  • Charge the battery before storage, and store it somewhere cool and dry.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put an electric motor on an inflatable kayak?

Yes, if the kayak has a standard US fin box. A fin motor slides into it, with no transom bracket or drilling.

Which Tedgix motor is best for a tandem kayak?

The K4S Sport. With 1500W and up to 47 lbs of thrust, it holds its cruise with two paddlers and gear aboard.

How fast does an electric kayak motor go?

Tedgix rates the K4C at up to 6 mph and the K4S at up to 9.3 mph. Expect a cruise of 3 to 5 mph, depending on load, wind and current.

Can I fly with a kayak motor battery?

No. Tedgix batteries are 423 Wh to 1526 Wh, and the FAA forbids lithium-ion batteries over 160 Wh on passenger aircraft, in carry-on or checked bags (FAA PackSafe, checked October 2026). Plan to drive with your battery, or charge one at your destination if you have one there.

Is the battery included?

No. The K4C needs a B4 or B8 battery and the K4S needs the B15, each sold separately.
