Side fins add tracking and bite on either side of the board, the same way a thruster setup works on a surfboard. They sharpen turn response in surf, hold the board on line in side chop and crosswind, and add stability when the board is leaning off the centerline. Most paddlers run them seasonally, not year-round.

If your board has dedicated side fin boxes, yes. NIXY boards designed for a 2+1 setup (one center fin plus two sides) accept these 5 inch tool-less side fins directly. Boards built for center-only single fin do not have the side boxes, so the side fins will not attach.

No, side fins are optional. A single 9 inch center fin handles most flatwater paddling on its own. Add side fins when you want extra tracking in side chop, more grip in surf or downwind runs, or a tighter turn on the rail. Many paddlers keep them in the bag and add them only when conditions call for it.

Slide each fin tab into its side fin box, drop in the included screw and plate, then finger-tighten. Tool-less install, under a minute per fin. The set of two includes both side fins plus the hardware. Remove them the same way for storage or travel.

Stiff reinforced plastic, the same material family as the stock 9 inch center fin. Black finish, tool-less plate included. Sized at 5 inches deep for clearance in shallower water without giving up grip.

Surf days, downwind runs, side chop, and any session where you want a quicker turn on the rail. Skip them on flat lake paddling where the center fin alone is plenty, and skip them in very shallow water where the side fins will catch the bottom before the center fin does.
