How Long Does It Take to Inflate a Paddle Board?
Plan on about 5 to 10 minutes to inflate a paddle board. By hand that is 5 to 10 minutes of steady pumping to reach full pressure. With an electric pump it is a similar window, but hands-free, so you can rig your leash and fins while it runs.
The time depends on a few things: the size of the board, the pressure you are pumping to, your pace, and the temperature. Most inflatable boards inflate to somewhere between 12 and 15 PSI, and a bigger touring board simply holds more air than a compact one, so it takes a little longer.
The last stretch is where the clock and your arms really feel it. The first two-thirds of the air goes in fast and easy. The final few PSI, the part that makes the board stiff and stable, is the hard, slow push by hand. That is the exact stretch an electric pump handles without you breaking a sweat, because it drives steadily to your set number and shuts off on its own.
Note: Rechargeable Battery Pack sold separately.
The NIXY Ventus Electric Pump at $69 takes the effort out of that last stretch: set your target pressure, plug it in, and it inflates the board and stops on its own so you never over- or under-fill. It is the difference between arriving winded and arriving ready to paddle.
Frequently asked questions
Is it hard to inflate a paddle board by hand? The first two-thirds is easy. The last few PSI, the part that makes the board rigid, takes real effort and is where most people feel it in their shoulders. A good dual-chamber manual pump moves more air per stroke to shorten that stretch, and an electric pump removes the effort entirely.
How much pressure should a paddle board be inflated to? Most inflatable paddle boards inflate to between 12 and 15 PSI. Check the recommended pressure printed near the valve on your board and inflate to that number. A board pumped to full pressure is noticeably stiffer and more stable than one left soft, which is why the last few PSI matter.
Is an electric pump worth it for a paddle board? For most paddlers, yes, especially if you paddle often or inflate more than one board. An electric pump saves your arms on the hard final stretch, hits an exact pressure, and shuts off on its own, so you spend your energy on the water instead of on the pump.
